Jen Appel: Educator, Filmmaker, Artist & Leader
Jen Appel was born sensitive, perhaps with a poet’s heart, with a natural inclination towards what was gentle, sweet, and even ephemeral. A true lover of nature, born in Old Brookville, New York, with family roots in Brooklyn and the Bronx, she was raised next to horses, among dogs and cats, and lots of land. Long green expanses, dotted by flowers and carefully curated trees, with blue skies and silent winds that highlighted each cricket and bird’s chirp. She was always one to respect the slower life of serenity.
She was also raised on the works of Martin Buber, Abraham Heschel, and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, philosophy passed down from a father who was himself a self-educated philosopher and businessman. That upbringing gave her an eagle’s view of life: the ability to see the end from the beginning. And this, in combination with moments of great loss in her young life that would continue throughout her adulthood, gave Jen an even deeper instinct for cherishing what’s in front of her: each moment, each person, every colleague, friend, pet, and passing flower.
While her work has brought her into some of the greatest and most powerful cities in the world, and her art has sung amidst their backdrops as only large, hard-won metropolitan cities can offer, and she appreciates every colorful stroke of her adventures, she craves a life that honors nature. While planting her roots in rich soil, she also works tirelessly to give people their voice, and the confidence to use it. Jen’s work is often woven through the themes of agency, self-responsibility, civic contribution, service, and honoring all the little things that life gives us for free, because she believes we each get one beautiful shot at this, and she hopes each person she meets finds a little magic in her offerings to help make the most of theirs.
Vision and Purpose
From an early age, Jennifer recognized the importance of creating art and messages that unite rather than divide. Her vision is not just to create but to inspire through the power of storytelling, meaningful communication, and truth. Jennifer’s life goal is to serve others, creating a space where unity, authenticity, and impact are at the forefront.
Jennifer has always believed in the power of authenticity and honesty in her work. By sharing her experiences and values, she hopes to create a ripple effect that encourages others to do the same. The goal is to foster an environment where creativity can flourish, and where people feel empowered to share their stories without fear of judgment.
Teaching & Mentorship
As an educator, Jennifer empowers individuals to discover their voice and impact the world with purpose-driven communication. She teaches subjects ranging from American history to public speaking and fine arts, working with both children and adults to unlock their potential. Through her Legacy Leadership Academy, Jennifer trains leaders of tomorrow to navigate challenges and create inclusive, thriving communities.
Jennifer’s work as a mentor is focused on nurturing leaders who value integrity, responsibility, and social change. She believes that leadership is about inspiring others to reach their potential while fostering a culture of collaboration and kindness.
Notable Works & Artistic Roots
Jennifer has an extensive background in the arts, having studied at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and created projects that span theater, film, and music. She founded Risk Productions to champion artistic works that push boundaries and make a difference, including her critically acclaimed show “Yes! Damn It.” Her passion for music and creation continues to shape her work as an artist and teacher.
Her connection to music, in particular, played a key role in her artistic journey. She worked with renowned musicians, creating an atmosphere where creativity and artistic freedom were nurtured. Jennifer reflects, “It’s not about being a star. It’s about the music, the message, and the connection.” The sense of community she found in these studios fueled her own creative projects.
